Elena Smirnova is a top real estate broker in New York City, one of the most competitive markets anywhere, and she arrived there by a route few of her colleagues can claim. Before she ever handled a transaction, she was an award-winning concert pianist, with three solo Carnegie Hall performances under her belt by the age of 21. She trained classically, graduated as valedictorian from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she also studied engineering, and earned her Master’s Degree from one of the top conservatories, Manhattan School of Music, magna cum laude.
Being a Russian immigrant, she moved to the US at age 5 with her family. She excelled in math and science throughout school, while music was always her passion, but she didn’t quite know how to combine all of those talents. Her first foray into business was in 2012, when she founded a music education company in NYC. Not long after, she discovered real estate and realized it was her true calling all along, combining all of her skill sets.
From the Concert Stage to the Closing Table
Without any contacts in New York or knowledge of the market, she took to real estate like a fish to water but with a lot of sharks to dodge! She became a top producer at her first company and has ever since been living and breathing real estate, excelling at every turn. She believes her skill set of having an analytical mind, combined with her innate creativity, incredible memory, problem-solving abilities, cheerful and humble attitude, the ability to connect with people, and truly care to understand their needs, helped her excel so quickly. After 3 years in the industry, when most of her colleagues were still doing rentals, she closed the biggest deal of her career, a $17M penthouse in Soho, which landed her on the Bravo TV show Million Dollar Listing NY and brought her a slew of media and clout.
Building Something of Her Own
A developer took notice of her business acumen and her reputation for closing challenging deals and hired her to be CEO of his brokerage in 2018. This position was the equivalent of a practical MBA for her as she got to be in the boardrooms with important investors and learn about all of the aspects of real estate acquisitions, development, sales, and management. Besides building the brokerage’s infrastructure, she grew and managed a team of agents, served as director of three new developments, and oversaw the leasing and property management of over 300 individual condo units owned by investors. She also became a real estate investor herself, putting her money where her mouth is, and has served as President of condo boards.
After the changes COVID brought to the market, she decided to return to the field as an agent and started her own team. She now runs The Supernova Team at Powered by DMT, a development marketing firm in NYC, where she is also the VP of Sales. “Supernova” was a nickname ascribed to her early on by a manager who noticed her talents, merging “super” and “nova” (part of her last name), which became her whole brand.
How She Works With Clients

Ask her about the thread connecting the key stages of her career, and the answer is consistent. It is the same discipline expressed in different ways. Prepare thoroughly, pay attention to detail, and perform when it matters. Her clients seek her out for her incredible eye for opportunities and for executing large, complex transactions, making her one of the most trusted advisors with a strong track record of handling deals gracefully and with the utmost discretion. That is exactly what the Supernova standard has been all along, starting from her childhood, practicing piano eight hours a day.
The years Elena spent as a pianist still shape how she works today. Classical music demanded precision, interpretation, and composure under pressure, and those habits did not disappear when she left the stage. She now describes her work as a performance discipline, combining her keen attention to detail with knowledge of the workings of real estate. Another important aspect of her business is her competitive drive, which she gets from being a ballet dancer in her youth to now competing in several Hyrox races.
Her clients can rest assured that she will treat their transaction with the same level of dedication and excellence, ensuring everything is handled with precision and brought across the finish line, no matter what obstacles may crop up throughout the transaction. With her savvy business experience as a CEO and real estate investor, she offers clients a wide range of perspectives when evaluating opportunities, providing a different lens than most agents.
The goal is that clients walk away saying, “I found something exceptional, I didn’t overpay, and I had someone sophisticated protecting my interests throughout the process.” It is a plain measure of success, and it keeps the focus on the client’s result rather than the agent’s pitch.
A Team With Momentum
This year has been a milestone for The Supernova Team. They have already secured over 42 million dollars in contracts and closed transactions, with 30 million dollars more in active new development and resale listings, and more than double that in active buyers. Her team’s approach is deliberately different from the big box model. While corporate conglomerates merge and push cookie-cutter strategies, Elena’s team treats every listing as its own distinct brand, with dedicated attention and custom marketing, making each one feel bespoke and stand out from the rest. The team also thrives on challenges. Where other agents see roadblocks and red tape, the Supernova Team is very malleable and can pivot easily. They always seek creative pathways to get any deal closed, and that mindset has become part of its reputation.
Recognition Earned Over Time

The results have been noticed. Elena has personally sold over half a billion dollars in real estate across her career. She was verified by RealTrends as being in the top 0.5 percent of agents in the country for 2025, has been a StreetEasy Top Building Expert, and has been a member of the Forbes Real Estate Council. She was recently named a 2026 Top Real Estate Newsmaker by RISMedia.
None of the accolades have changed the essence of how she works. Show up prepared, listen to each client’s unique needs, put ego aside, and let the results speak. For Elena, this business has always been about the people.
